Redcurrant is a deciduous shrub widely cultivated in many regions. Native to Asia and Western Europe a mature bush can produce 4 kg fruit yearly. The fruits contain 50 calories is cholesterol and fat free.
There are different verities of redcurrant. You have those that flower late, disease resistant and good potting plants. Others produce heavy crop, fruit early and have large berries. Types are the Stanza, Rovada, Junifer, Jonkheer van Tets and Red Lake rurrant.

How to Grow Redcurrant
Established plants require good compost, moist soil and moderate watering. Use granular fertilizer once a year and hand weed. Prune by removing old branches to keep plant compact.
Cut new growths each year and prune shoots from main stem to one bud. If you use a flower pot make sure it has adequate drainage holes. Apply liquid fertilizer in new plants thrice a month.
When planting allow 6ft between bushes and best planting season is November. Make sure the container is large enough and at least 45 cm.
Pests and Diseases
Common problems are birds and gooseberry sawfly. Once the fruits are firm and juicy it’s time to harvest.
