Organic fertilizer is derived from compost, vegetable matter, food waste, crop residue, excreta. While organic food waste comprises waste grains, packaged food, fruits, vegetables, fish/meat entrails.
Food waste is a serious problem in urban areas of the world. Huge garbage dumpsites have adverse environmental impact on the people’s lives. Negative effect include diseases, health hazards, harmful greenhouse gases, climate change, ground water pollution, soil pollution.
Benefits of food waste organic fertilizer are renewable energy, improved ground water. Others are high quality organic fertilizer, low environmental impact, beneficial to soil, reduce erosion and no need for fungicides.

Sources of Organic Waste
There are many sources of organic waste apart from food waste. Other sources are animal based, plant, mineral, treated sewage, treated sewage is bio solids or sewage sludge, plant are decomposed crop residue while animal includes livestock manure, bonemeal, fish meal, bloodmeal. Other sources are peat, compost, ash, rock dust, Alfalfa, cover crop, rock phosphate and wood chippings.

Why Organic Waste
Organic waste is easily composted with unique compost elements. Elements include trace elements, inorganic salts, cellulose and starchy elements. It is biodegradable with high organic matter, huge nutrients, high moisture content, crude protein lipids, ash and fats. Water content accounts for 80% of the composition therefore Dehydration is essential in organic waste composting.

Equipment for production of organic waste fertilizer are in-vessel composter, automatic or manual sorting system. Others include dewatering system (screen type) oil water separation system, solid liquid separator, feeding system.

How to Produce Organic Fertilizer with Food Waste
The entire process starts with the sorting, separation, and composting. It continues with the granulation, drying, cooling, screening and packaging.
Organic Fertilizer Production Process
To produce organic fertilizer from food waste the process involves dividing flow into parts. The first step is to dehydrate food waste then remove in-organic waste. The sorting process takes care of inorganic waste like wood, nylon, paper. Others are plastics, metal, aluminum, fabrics, and packaging.
The next process involves the separation of grease, crushing and de-hydration process in the solid-liquid separator. The extruded waste is then dried and sterilizer at high temperature to removal of microorganisms, unwanted pathogens and excess moisture.
Composting is done in the in-vessel while the oil water separator handles the mixture of oil and removed waste water to produce industrial oil or produce bio-diesel. To achieve excellent quality composting it is advised to use an in-vessel composter.
It offers fast composting at optimum temperature fully enclosed fermentation. It takes four to seven days at temperature of 65C to produce high quality compost. The compost it produces has rich organic material is odorless, effectively kills pathogens and well sanitized.
The purpose for granulation is to increase flow property, easy handling. Other reasons to granulate include easy storage, packaging, free from odor, pathogens or weed. Granulation sized depends on the manufacturers preference based on local market requirements. Organic fertilizer sizes range from 0.5mm to 5mm.
Drying, Cooling, Screening and Packaging
Use a rotary drum drying and cooling machine to deodorize, sterilize remove any water content. Use screening process to separate unqualified granules before the final stage of packaging.
